Who wants to see Up? It looks really cute... I'm tentatively thinking of Sunday night 5/31 (while [livejournal.com profile] joecoustic is here, yay!), at 7:35 in Revere. Let me know if you'd like to join us... :-)
vettecat: (simpson)
As previously mentioned, [livejournal.com profile] joecoustic is coming to visit (yaaaaaay!), and we'd like to give people an opportunity to see her while she's here. After some discussion we've decided to keep it casual rather than doing something structured. So, to that end...

You're invited to an
Open House
starring
[livejournal.com profile] joecoustic!
Sunday, May 31
from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
at our home

(drop me an e-mail if you need location/directions)

* Please let me know if you're planning on coming (and if you're planning on bringing anyone) so we'll know how many snacks/chairs/etc. we'll need. Thanks!

Caveats:
- furred felines will be present
- children are welcome as long as they're under supervision
- please don't bring food/drink (kosher household)... we'll have plenty to munch on
- no smoking unless you're a flame-based superhero

Looking forward to seeing you!

[livejournal.com profile] joecoustic is coming to visit! Yaaaaaaaaaay! So we thought we should give some other people a chance to see her, too. :-) Current thought is to have some form of gathering* at our place on Sunday, May 31. If you're interested, let me know, and I'll keep you posted with details as the plan develops.

* One possibility: a housefilk? How does one go about arranging such a thing?

My mother was in a silly mood tonight...

I've lost track of who has and hasn't heard this already so I thought I should post a general update... My mom's new marriage didn't work out. She quickly realized that she didn't know him as well as she had thought, and they really weren't compatible after all. So he is now back in Florida, and they're working on dissolving it as simply as possible. It's a shame that it wasn't a better combination, but having come to that realization, she's much happier being out of the relationship.

Sorry I don't have something more cheerful to share, hopefully we'll have better news soon!

So the news of the day is that my mother is engaged...

For those who don't know that she's been seeing someone: They've known each other for about 40 years, since they were both young newlyweds (to other people), and the couples stayed friends over the years. He and his wife got divorced a few years ago. (They were both at our wedding, at separate tables.) When my mom went down to Florida for a week's vacation a couple months ago, she arranged to get together with all her Florida friends... including him. One afternoon led to another, and they wound up spending most of the week together. Somewhere along the way they realized they were interested in each other as more than just friends.

Since then they've been spending more and more time on the phone, and he's come up to visit a few times. A couple days ago he came up again with the intent of spending a few weeks alternating between here and his son's house in New York. Several long, intense conversations followed, and this morning my mom came into the store with the news that they're engaged. I think that half of Brookline was in the store shrieking with glee over the course of the day, so the word seems to be out.

No word yet on further plans, but this is still pretty recent. There's a lot to be decided - whether/when she'll move to Florida, what happens with the store, etc.... but for the moment it's just nice to see her so happy.

Some of you remember my posting about my aunt's friend's son having been murdered in Ohio a few months ago. Well, good news - they caught the people who did it! Yay! (I'm appending the articles below, because you have to have an account, so...) Read more... )

My aunt's friend's son was killed during a robbery earlier today. As you can imagine the whole community is in shock. It's bad enough when you hear about something like this in the abstract; it's even more distressing when you know someone involved, even if indirectly...

Success!

As some of you know, tonight was my mother's surprise or it would have been if she hadn't figured it out over the weekend birthday party. She was skittish about going, because she doesn't really like being the focus of attention, but she appreciated the effort I had put into it so she agreed to "behave." It went wonderfully. Everyone loved the desserts (I got a lot of awed compliments), and once my mother realized that these really are all people she likes she was able to relax. There was a lot of smiling and laughing. The last few stragglers didn't leave until after 11 (it started at 7:30), and my mom just called to thank me and say how much she enjoyed it. Yay! The only less-than-ideal aspect was that I apparently was too optimistic about how much people would eat, so there's quite a bit left over. But we can deal with that. I'm just very pleased and relieved that it went so well and she did enjoy it in the end. I'll try to post pictures in the next day or two so you can see the desserts. :-)

OK, back to Arisia mail...

Almost...

We're spending this visit to Ohio, as we often do, trying to see as many people as we can! Today we had lunch with [livejournal.com profile] pandorahunter and [livejournal.com profile] ronyon, then went to visit Aunt H. with [livejournal.com profile] sdavido's brother N. (sister-in-law [livejournal.com profile] kiddr was sadly unable to come) and their parents. We then all returned home and had dinner with Aunt B. [livejournal.com profile] joecoustic came into town too, and we hope to spend some time with her tomorrow and/or Wednesday. Tomorrow night we're getting together with [livejournal.com profile] bug_mama and [livejournal.com profile] david_brenner. Wednesday night we're having dinner with cousin G. There are more people we'd like to see, and places we'd like to go, but since we're coming back Thursday it's hard to say how much we can fit in. We're trying, though!

(The only sad note is that Aunt H. - who is 92 and in a nursing home - was admitted to the hospital tonight, but we're praying it's something minor. We should know more tomorrow.)

Whew!

Been busy, just a quick update...

The Arisia resume (furniture needs, power requirements, et al) has been submitted to the hotel; hopefully I haven't left anything out!

I've baked and taken over to the hosting friend's freezer most of the desserts for my mom's party (2 cakes, 6 pans of squares, 6 kinds of cookies) - just the "centerpiece" cake left. I'm planning to do that the week before the party, hopefully it'll go smoothly.

Between the two projects I've been pretty consumed, I haven't really had time to answer social mail or read LJ posts since Tuesday night. I apologize for being out of touch, I'll try to catch up soon.

We're leaving to visit [livejournal.com profile] sdavido's parents tomorrow morning. We have a 6:30 a.m. flight (ugh!) so we have to get up pretty early... not sure whether or not it's worth going to bed tonight. If I have time after packing, etc. and still have energy I'll try to do a little LJ catch-up. If not, maybe while we're away, if there's time... we'll see.

Hope you are doing well!

Well, we're home from lunch/dinner at my aunt and uncle's. It was nice to see everyone (it's amazing how fast my cousins' kids are growing), and, of course, there was more food than we could reasonably eat. Here's the menu, if you're curious. )
I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday!

On the subject of Thanksgiving, some of you may have seen this before, but it's still very well done. Check out the Is Thanksgiving Kosher? analysis...

On another topic, my computer is acting weird again. None of my shortcuts are working. Not from the desktop, not from the program menu... not at all, as far as I can figure out. I have been able to launch programs by clicking on the .exe icons in Windows Explorer so thankfully I can still do some things. But we might take it to MicroCenter tomorrow in hopes that they can fix it before it gets worse. (It also needs a new CD drive, and we've been meaning to get that taken care of before the warranty expires.) If we do take it in, I'm hoping I won't be without it for very long... but if you don't hear from me for a couple days, that's probably why.

While I have your attention (?), if I have angered or offended you in the past year, I apologize, and hope you will forgive me. If you tell me what I did, I'll try not to do it again.

I think that's all for the moment. You may now return to your normally scheduled lives...

Assuming I don't have time to go online tomorrow afternoon (which I probably won't), I'll be offline for Rosh haShana through Wednesday night. Should be a nice couple of days... a friend we don't get to see very often is staying with us, and the weather forecast looks promising. My mom is coming for dinner one night (and we're joining her for lunch), my dad is coming the other night. We've been cooking and putting stuff in the fridge for a few days, just have some last-minute organizing left. Hopefully everything will go smoothly. Best wishes to everyone for a happy, healthy, and sweet new year! See you all next year... :-)
vettecat: (swedish chef)
My mom had invited me and [livejournal.com profile] sdavido for lunch today (Saturday), along with a few other people. When I asked if I could make anything, she said, "yes, if it's something pretty." (She's been having a lot of fun hosting in her new place, and likes to dress things up.) So the other night I pulled out my new Cook's Illustrated cookbook (Best Side Dishes - the one I got from the focus group) and found a recipe that looked promising. It was something I'd heard about previously, but they claimed to have made it more approachable.

So I spent part of yesterday making Potatoes Anna. I was a bit nervous at moments, but thankfully it came out really well, and my mother was very pleased. The guests seem to have liked it too... there wasn't much left. :-) I also made big soft double-chocolate cookies, and some frozen cherry fluff to serve on them, which worked really well. (And then there was all the stuff she made, of course... she believes that if the guests can move at the end of the meal, she hasn't done her job.)

On a non-homemade note, I found a yummy new bread at Stop & Shop. I picked up a loaf of their Maple Cinnamon bread on a whim, and it is really good... if you don't mind sweet! (And it's even pareve.) I'm annoyed with them right now b/c it seems they don't carry Coffee Rich anymore, but they do still have some stuff.

This afternoon, my mother and I decided to go down to Newbury Street so we could walk around and enjoy the lovely weather. ([livejournal.com profile] sdavido wanted to work on syllabi et al for the classes starting this week.) Beautiful day, and it was nice to be outside... ordinarily we're in the store all day, so being outside in daylight, with no specific destination, was a treat. We wandered by lots of restaurants, galleries, and clothing stores with no real interest, going into the occasional odd store that caught our attention. Naturally I picked up a few treats for SD-. :-) A particular highlight was seeing two Lamborghinis (a Murciealgo and a Gallardo, I think) and an Aston Martin (maybe a Vantage?) valet-parked in front of Emporio Armani. We had noticed a wider mix of stores than there used to be, but apparently that's still where the high rollers hang out... or at least park their cars.
