Going buggy

While taking stuff out of our dry-goods cabinet earlier, I thought I saw something moving. I looked closer and called [livejournal.com profile] sdavido... we started taking stuff off the shelves and discovered teensy little black bugs crawling around. So we spent a good chunk of this evening (morning?) emptying the cabinet and looking for bugs. Don't know whether we got them all (they kept vanishing between the shelves), or whether we can put the stuff back, but it's going to have to do for now. In the meantime, didn't get done what we needed to do tonight, of course... argh...

That type of thing always grosses me out. I wish you the best in your debugging efforts.

Sounds like possibly shelf bugs. The cure is to individually zip-lok bag all your food, to eliminate the source. Keep bagging new food for at least a month. Then you can stop bagging the new stuff, but keep the old in its bags until it's used up. Next Passsover, throw away anything in a bag.

Shelf bugs come from the market, and prefer fruits & grains.

Flour and / or cereal are the usual offenders here (places the bugs are hiding), but I guess anything like cookies / crackers are possible too. Good luck.

You know, given your two bug posts (the first about your health bugs...), you might want to double-check your computers' virus protection programs.

Just sayin'...

They sell trap-things at Whole Foods that take care of those. And they're relatively inexpensive.

Thanks!

Sounds accurate. We did throw away the few things that weren't totally sealed... we'll have to be more careful for a while. Thanks!

Actually there was a partial bag of flour which seemed to have the highest concentration. Hopefully now that we've gotten rid of it they won't be as attracted.

Actually that did occur to me! That's one trifecta I really don't want to hit...

Thanks for the tip! I did pick up some ant traps at the supermarket, but I was worried that these bugs might be too small to get caught in them.

Sadly, those weren't ant traps, but bait thingys. And, it seems the like 'em.
