Fun with Foodies
Anyone who says Americans don't cook anymore hasn't been to Brookline lately...
We were invited to a book-release party tonight at the home of Cook's Illustrated. (For those who aren't familiar with the magazine, it's great fun if you like to cook. They pick apart every recipe in great detail, trying - and reporting on - every variation before giving you what they consider to be the best version.) This is also where they film America's Test Kitchen, which I haven't actually watched, but apparently it has a large following.
They were letting people wander through The Kitchen, with aproned staffers on hand to answer questions, but the bulk of the crowd (one staffer said there were about 300 people there) swarmed around the cookbook tables. I hadn't realized they had published so many!
sdavido gave me their baking cookbook for our anniversary, and I've been greatly enjoying it, but there were something like 40 different cookbooks stacked on tables... and they were all discounted for the event.
So we browsed the tables for a while, bumping into people (including one person I know from Arisia, but I forgot to ask if he has an LJ name), and eventually selected a couple to bring home. I still can't decide if it was a bargain, or an indulgence, or both...
We decided against having them autographed by the main author, as the line was winding around the room. But it was still neat to see that kind of enthusiastic turnout for a cookbook release! :-)
