Going forth on the 4th

Our day was a little random but it was fun anyway. We both had stuff we wanted to work on at home this morning, so we didn't wind up going out until midafternoon. We had been thinking of checking out an ice-cream place a little further afield than we usually go, but since it was such a beautiful day I really wanted to walk around outside. It didn't seem to make sense to drive 45 minutes to get ice cream someplace rural and then just get in the car and drive back.

So we went to Christina's (I got Coconut Butterfinger and Burnt Sugar, [livejournal.com profile] sdavido got Carrot Cake and Adzuki Bean), wandered around Inman Square a bit, then headed down to Harvard Square and browsed through bookstores. After that we sat outside the Au Bon Pain and enjoyed the night air - or tried to. People kept lighting cigarettes so we had to keep moving, as I really have trouble breathing if someone's smoking near me. When it got toward the later side of the evening, we decided we had better head down toward the river so we could see the fireworks... we thought maybe we'd see if we could find [livejournal.com profile] chanaleh's group.

We were on Mass. Ave. approaching MIT when we saw a few fireworks above one of the buildings. I was confused because I thought the fireworks were scheduled for later than that, but when I flipped on the radio simulcast, they were playing the 1812 Overture, which usually accompanies the fireworks. As we crept forward through traffic (dodging policemen and traffic barriers), the piece ended, and just before 10:00 (when I had originally thought the fireworks would start) the radio announcer cheerily announced the end of the July 4th concert. I thought I must have gotten the timing backward somehow. This was very disappointing as we had really wanted to catch the fireworks, but we gradually extracted ourselves from the traffic snarl and made our way home.

We arrived home about 10:30, and I called my mother to chat. She told me that she could see the fireworks from her window. Um, what fireworks? She said that the fireworks over the river had apparently just started, and she had a clear view from her condo. OK, we were now thoroughly confused... but, back in the car, over to my mom's place. Sure enough, she had a great view of the fireworks (and she had the TV on broadcasting the concert, so we know they were the same ones). I still don't understand why there was a half-hour gap in the middle, but after all the back-and-forth it was nice that we could see most of them, at least. And now we know she has a good vantage point. (Her unit is in the corner on the top floor; I imagine very few people in that building could see them.)

Then back home to check e-mail. :-) Tomorrow is a "normal" day so I really shouldn't stay up too late. Hope you all had a nice day, and got to enjoy the lovely weather!
