Chronicles, weather and otherwise

As many of you will have noticed, we had snow Friday. Initially it didn't seem like such a big deal. Yes, it was snowing, but that happens during the winter. I had heard that it was supposed to lighten up in the afternoon, so I did stuff around the house in the morning and headed out to do errands after lunch. This turned out to be a mistake.

When I went out to clean off the car, it was snowing fairly hard - by the time I cleaned off the second half of the car, the first half was covered in snow again. Annoying but not really worrisome. However, as we progressed on our errands ([livejournal.com profile] sdavido wound up coming along), it got steadily worse. Within a short time visibility was down to almost nothing - and that was walking down the sidewalk. A lot of cliches (biting snow, driving wind, etc.) became strongly relevant. We looked at each other after walking into one store, and SD- looked like his beard was actually made out of snow. From what he said I looked pretty stormblown too. But we continued to push through it to try to get a few more things done... until we noticed the thunder and lightning. These are not normal phenomena during a snowstorm. At that point we decided we had better head back.

We were only a few minutes from home, in theory, but it took a while to get back. We cleared off the car, but only the front window remained clear while driving - visibility in any other direction was sketchy at best. And to say that traffic was at a crawl would be generous. We made it back to our place, but couldn't get up the (slanted) driveway, so SD- hurriedly dug out a street space and I maneuvered the car into it. We stumbled into our place, started clearing snow from faces, hair, etc.... and shortly thereafter it stopped. The rest of the night was clear, and today was sunny and pleasant. Never a dull moment...

(For those of you out of town, there's an article about the storm here.)

Tonight we went to see The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe with a few (non-LJ) friends. I thought it was good, but not amazing. I haven't read the series, so I could only judge it on its merits as a movie. SD- knows a lot more about it so he commented about what they left out, but that always happens when they adapt a book. From what he said they mostly stuck to the story, though. But I wouldn't say it was a good movie for little kids - some of scenes were fairly violent (thus the PG rating). I'll be curious to see whether they film the rest of the series.
