I often commute home past the Hyatt Regency on Memorial Drive (a.k.a. the ziggurat). I've noticed that they've been changing the color of the neon that edges the steps a lot more often lately. So far I've seen red, yellow, green, and blue. Which leads me to think there's no way they can be using chemical tubes. Anyone have any idea how they're doing that? Just wondering...

maybe they have fiber-optic lighting. usually i see that implemented when the color changes every few seconds, but they may consider that a little too unrefined at the hyatt.

but then, i work for a boss who's all about fiber optics, so it makes sense that that's the first thing that's come to mind.

I've always perceived it as a string of bulbs: red, green, blue, red, green, blue, etc. and that they build up the colors the same way your TV screen does. Red+Green = Yellow. Red+Blue = Purple. Green+Blue = Cyan (not that the Hyatt has used that). Red+Green+Blue = White.

I've chatted with Phi about this; he's said they can change them to various colours and on various programs. You might want to ask him as I'll bet he knows the mechanism, too. :-)

I had assumed they were LED-based.

I believe they're LEDs from Color Kinetics (http://colorkinetics.com/)(?). I originally thought that they selected the colors, but I think they're on a slowly changing pattern. So if you drive past the hotel a couple of times, you'll see a different color each time.

Correct!

...when Boston’s national sports teams win homes games – the hotel exterior lights will change colors.

The following is the game plan:

* New England Patriots – Blue lights
* Boston Bruins – Yellow lights
* Boston Red Sox – Red lights
* Boston Celtics – Green lights

No mention of losses, same day wins for multiple teams, wins on the road, non game days...
