En route to work this morning I was listening to the Temptations' Papa Was a Rollin' Stone. One line in that song always catches me: Is it "and when he died, all he left us was..." "alone" or "a loan"? I'm never sure. I could look it up, but what I really wonder is whether the ambiguity was intentional...

I've been fretting lately about not being able to back up my files b/c I've exceeded the capacity of my 1GB flash drive. Tonight [livejournal.com profile] sdavido gave me a present: a 4GB flash drive, red, shaped like a heart, on a long chain. More than enough space, and pretty to boot. Yay!

First, thought y'all ([livejournal.com profile] lucretia_borgia in particular) might like the new t-shirt that [livejournal.com profile] sdavido got for me. Hee hee. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lensman for the tip!)

And, a cute meme borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] gnomi (I'll trust y'all to keep it rated PG):
1. Think of the first word that comes to mind when you think of me.
2. Go to Google Images and search for that word.
3. Reply to this post with one of the pictures on the first page of results (don't tell me the word).
4. Put this in your own journal so that I can do the same.

I'd never heard of it before... Where does he find these things?

Mmmmmm...

Add to the previously-mentioned gifts from [livejournal.com profile] sdavido: a multicolored watch set, a bottle of perfume... and a pan of homebaked seven-layer bars from Baking Illustrated. Yummmmm. I told him I think he's discovered [livejournal.com profile] vettecat catnip...

In the meantime I got some unpacking done. Not as much as I'd hoped, but I can see a difference. It's progress at least.

Ooooooo!

I've been needing a new (computer) mouse. [livejournal.com profile] sdavido said he thought he had a spare somewhere and he'd try to find it. Turns out he was being sneaky. Read more... )

[livejournal.com profile] sdavido just gave me a couple-days-early birthday present: a DVD recording of Torvill & Dean's "Bolero" performance at the '84 Olympics (complete with judges' marks). That's always been one of my favorites, and I have it on a VCR tape somewhere, but as he points out the tape is probably degrading. So now I have a copy that won't wear out. It's so nice that he knows what I like...

A neighbor of ours is buying a new entertainment center, and is asking around as to whether anyone would like her present unit. I offered to pass the word. Here's her description:

The entertainment center actually comes in two pieces, one side holds the television (the one I have is 32"), vcr and cable box and the other side just kind of displays things - this second side has two glass doors. It's a light wood and stands about 4 feet - I'm probably way off but can get you exact measurements if you want them. It's really nice, I'm just ready for a change.

If you're interested (and able to pick it up in Allston), let me know, and I'll pass it on!

That's about all that's new over here, hope you all have a nice weekend...

Got a new desk chair. OK, not new, exactly - the store next door to ours was throwing it out b/c they got something newer. But it was sitting in the back hallway, and hadn't made it out to the dumpster yet... so it wasn't quite trash, right?

It's definitely newer than my old chair. My previous desk chair was originally one of my parents' kitchen chairs, but when they replaced them I took one. ("How can you throw out a perfectly good chair?") (Me, a pack rat?...) So I've had it for maybe 6 years, and it wasn't new when I got it. I guess it's reasonable that it should be getting a bit worn.

So I'm trying out the new(er) chair. The nice thing is it seems to be much better for my back, which has been bothering me lately. Maybe the chair was part of the problem. I'll try this one for a few days and see what I think of it.

In the meantime... how do you decide when something is "old" or "new," anyway?
