I often commute home past the Hyatt Regency on Memorial Drive (a.k.a. the ziggurat). I've noticed that they've been changing the color of the neon that edges the steps a lot more often lately. So far I've seen red, yellow, green, and blue. Which leads me to think there's no way they can be using chemical tubes. Anyone have any idea how they're doing that? Just wondering...

My mom's computer has been infected by "malware alarm 2.1". She has Windows 2000 Pro. Any recommendations for the best way to get rid of it? Free would be nice but simple is most important. Thank you, O Smart People!

I meant to ask someone who gets HBO to tape this program for us tonight, and completely forgot. ([livejournal.com profile] sdavido uses the associated book in his political science classes.) Did anyone happen to tape it, and/or have it stored on Tivo? If someone has access and wouldn't mind making us a copy, we'd be very grateful...

[livejournal.com profile] sdavido has been having some computer trouble, and we're looking for advice. His computer (Apple titanium G3 Powerbook, with Tiger 10.4) isn't "seeing" his external hard drive (LaCie 117 gig firewire). He's tried DriveGenius and DataRescue2 (demo versions), as well as the normal Mac disk utilities, but nothing has worked. The computer refuses to admit that the drive exists. (He says, "it isn't making clunkity noises, either.") He has a bunch of files on there that he really needs for a project he's working on, so any help and/or insights you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well, we're home from lunch/dinner at my aunt and uncle's. It was nice to see everyone (it's amazing how fast my cousins' kids are growing), and, of course, there was more food than we could reasonably eat. Here's the menu, if you're curious. )
I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday!

On the subject of Thanksgiving, some of you may have seen this before, but it's still very well done. Check out the Is Thanksgiving Kosher? analysis...

On another topic, my computer is acting weird again. None of my shortcuts are working. Not from the desktop, not from the program menu... not at all, as far as I can figure out. I have been able to launch programs by clicking on the .exe icons in Windows Explorer so thankfully I can still do some things. But we might take it to MicroCenter tomorrow in hopes that they can fix it before it gets worse. (It also needs a new CD drive, and we've been meaning to get that taken care of before the warranty expires.) If we do take it in, I'm hoping I won't be without it for very long... but if you don't hear from me for a couple days, that's probably why.

There's a show on the Discovery Channel* tomorrow night that [livejournal.com profile] sdavido would really like to see. Would someone possibly be able to record** it for us?

* I don't know whether we get the Discovery Channel, I never turn on the TV (aside from watching DVDs). We only have cable because it comes with the Broadband.

** We might be able to record it if we get the channel, but we might not have a blank tape/DVD, and might discover at the last second that the VCR/recorder had the hiccups... and since I work 'til 8 tomorrow night, and Solomon works 'til 9:30, we might not find out it wasn't working until it was too late. If possible I'd much rather have someone record it as back-up, just in case.

I'm back!

You mean you didn't miss me? I'm crushed... (snif)

Seriously, I've been offline for a week now b/c my computer crashed when we installed a driver for our new cable modem. Very frustrating, as you would imagine. After several days of trying everything we could think of, calling people for advice, etc., the kind and generous [livejournal.com profile] lensman came out and managed to revive it. Yay! I'm finally back up and running, but I imagine it's going to take me a while to catch up. So if I answer a question that's several days old, that's why. :-)

I was planning to post an entry last Sunday night, but couldn't. I was planning to tell you all about our family reunion. Read more... )

On another note, I imagine most of you have seen this by now - I was going to post it a while ago - but for those who haven't: Hear the word of the Flying Spaghetti Monster!

We haven't been able to connect in a couple days because our Broadband has been down. Last night [livejournal.com profile] sdavido called up Comcast in an effort to get it fixed, and after going in circles for 45 minutes was told there's an outage in our area. Lovely. I called up tonight to see when it might be fixed, and got a recording claiming we have a service appointment - which we did not schedule - on a day when we'll be out of town. So I passed the phone back to [livejournal.com profile] sdavido, and after an hour of aggravation with several different Comcast workers giving conflicting information, they finally confirmed that there is still an outage. But they're going to send over a service guy in a couple days anyway in case our modem is the problem. (Believe me, the long version is much more confusing...)

In the meantime, frustrated at being unable to connect, I announced to [livejournal.com profile] sdavido that I was going to regress and pulled my 100-foot phone cord out of the closet. (Always have one in case of emergencies!) He had to help me find the right port on the new computer, but it seems to be working quite happily. I don't know whether I'll have the time to catch up on everything b/c I'm hooked up through the phone line instead of our usual Broadband, but the sad thing is this is the fastest connection I've had in days...

[livejournal.com profile] lensman generously spent his evening tonight transferring my files from my old computer to [livejournal.com profile] sdavido's spare laptop. Mine was reaching its limit, and several potential buyers for his had fizzled, so it makes sense. I need to get a splitter so I can hook up my keyboard along with the mouse - having to reach over the touchpad is really uncomfortable - but it'll be nice to (hopefully) not have to worry about crashing the system.

And a belated thank you to [livejournal.com profile] burningriver and all the others who responded to my call for help for my friend with the Mozilla problem last week.

Nerd power! :-)

This may be a long shot, but, does anyone out there know anything about Mozilla? A friend/fellow merchant just accidentally deleted an address book/mailer while trying to copy addresses from one to the other, and is now beside herself because she doesn't know how to retrieve it (or whether this is even possible). If you do know how to do that, and would be willing to talk with a very nice but somewhat panicked stranger, please give me a call at the store (617) 734-3114 (I'm here 'til 8) and I'll connect you. If this isn't your department, sorry to bother you. :-) Thanks very much!
