Finally got around to installing the software for our new camera (yay!), so now I can show y'all the cake I made for Arisia!

As I've mentioned, this was the 20th Arisia, so the chair asked me to make a cake for the staff party. She said I could do whatever I wanted. Hee hee.

I was thinking of doing a topsy-turvy cake (a.k.a. a "mad hatter" cake), but realized when I started shaping it that the layers needed to be taller and narrower. Oh well. Hopefully it still looks cool.

Used 5 lb flour, 5 lb sugar, 1/2 lb cocoa, 6 lb confectioner's sugar... took me 2 nights (3 if you count baking). It was gobbled up in 1/2 hour. Fortunately that's a good thing for a cake.

Pardon the background clutter, I was going to snip these down but don't want to spend any more time on it right now.

As you may be able to infer, my "vision" for the cake was "rocket to the moon." (Could also be called "Excelsior.") What do you think? Did it work? :-)

As I recently mentioned, I've been working on the cake for a friend's daughter's Bat Mitzvah party, which is this coming Sunday. The young lady loves to read and likes the color blue. This is what I came up with. (You really don't want to know how long this took... and for scale, the board it's on [borrowed from another congregant] is 18" square.) Read more... )

With all the prep for Arisia I've fallen about a week behind on posts, which are at skip = 500+. There's no way I'm going to catch up. If I missed something you think I should see, or would find of interest, please let me know. Thanks!

As a partial apology, though, I'll share one of the things that was taking up my time. Read more... )

Must go to bed... have a good Monday Tuesday, everyone!

The cake is done. Bears only a slight resemblance to the idea I based it on, but I think it looks pretty good. Cleared sugar off all the kitchen surfaces, etc. ... no energy to answer e-mail, will have to catch up in the morning. G'night, all...

Whoof

I have, over the course of the last few nights, made 96 tulips (each consisting of 6 petals, hand-cut and assembled) - divided amongst four colors - and 79 leaves out of sugarpaste, to use on the centerpiece cake for my mom's party. Tomorrow night I plan to frost and assemble it. (The cake layers are waiting patiently in their pans.) I really hope this looks good when it's all put together...

(And now I get to go answer Arisia mail - whee!)

Made so far (and put in mom's friend's freezer) for Mom's surprise party:
Brown sugar bars
Apricot squares
Lemon squares
Nurnberger cookies (honey spice, very pretty, topped with a flower made out of blanched almonds and a glazed cherry - can't find a picture online)
Raspberry white cake (like this, except instead of just berries around the bottom, I did puffs of green frosting with berries interspersed)
Tulip rainbow cake (like this, except I trimmed the bottom with red and green cherries [left over from the nurnberger], and the inside is rainbow-swirled)

Just three kinds of squares, five kinds of cookies, and one more cake to go... :-) I'm hoping to get as many of the squares and cookies done this week as I can, so the last week I'll just have the main cake left; it might be kind of labor-intensive.
