Bzzzzz...

On Thursday morning, my mother and I noticed a couple of large flies in the store. We figured they'd flown in when someone held the door open too long, and they'd eventually fly out again. However, as the day went on, we started to notice more flies... and then more... when I counted 15 we decided that was way too many, and my mom went to the hardware store and bought some flypaper. (To that point, the only one we'd managed to kill was one that drowned in her tea by accident. We hadn't managed to actually hit any of them.)

We hung a few strips in the back of the store, where we hoped they'd be less noticeable, and hoped that would take care of it. Fortunately it had been a quiet afternoon, so we hadn't had to deal with customers ducking as the flies buzzed around them, but the atmosphere had gotten rather unpleasant by then, as you might imagine. These were big flies - a half-inch long at least, with some closer to an inch - and they were rather aggressive. And every time we looked around, there were more of them. We couldn't figure out where they were coming from.

Thankfully [livejournal.com profile] sdavido had said he'd meet me at the store that evening (so we could go to the supermarket). As some of you may remember from previous stories, he's really, really good at killing bugs. (He doesn't enjoy it, but he's very good at it.) He arrived shortly before closing time, and I said, "Oh good, you're here! Help! There are flies everywhere!"

We locked the door, I gave him a piece of heavy cardboard to use, and he started swatting flies. Lots and lots of flies. We lost count after 30... my mother and I were running around picking them up with strips of flypaper, so we could have evidence to show the landlord.

After about half an hour of this, we decided it was enough and we should call it a night. By this point the flies had been reduced from a swarm to perhaps a dozen. (I was very glad that SD- had come by!) We hung the fly-covered flypaper back up, along with a few more strips to catch the stragglers, and left.

Yesterday, my mom and I met at the store to check the fly situation. There were still a few buzzing around, but not nearly as many as there had been. My father, who had offered to come along, managed to kill a couple more with SD-'s homemade flyswatter. It looked like a scene from a horror movie with all the fly-covered strips hanging from the ceiling. My mom tried calling the landlord to come take a look, but he'd already left for the day. So we left the remaining flies to get caught on the flypaper, and hoped that would take care of them.

When we go back tomorrow morning, we'll see where things stand. We'll have to preserve the used flypaper somehow so we can show it to the landlord, but we're very much hoping that there won't be more than one or two flies still left... that really isn't an experience that we want to repeat.
