Day on the town

Spent the day with
sdavido's friends from out-of-town. It was nice to finally meet them in person.
My father was nice enough to lend us his car so we didn't have to work around the T closings. (Fitting 4 adults and a kid in a car seat in my car would have been a challenge, to say the least.) This made everything much simpler... especially since they have a 3-year-old, who requires the requisite stroller, diaper bag, etc.
We started with breakfast (ooooh!), followed by a side trip to show them the store - and so they could go to a camera shop. Then we headed downtown for a ride on the Swan Boats, followed by some general wandering around the Public Garden and Boston Common.
The weather was perfect. And the Garden looks beautiful. I heard they were polishing things up for the DNC - they did a nice job. We almost never do anything social in daylight so this was a treat.
We didn't see any obvious signs of increased security, though I don't know, e.g., how many policemen on horseback are riding around on an average day. We did see a lot of people wearing badges. And the lack of trash cans was annoying. (They've been temporarily removed to decrease the risk of bombs and/or vandalism.)
There were a few protest groups present. A group of women wearing black and carrying fake babies were marching through the Garden to protest the war, and the deaths caused thereby. Another group was setting up rows of shoes on a swath of grass - one for every soldier killed in Iraq. Both groups (and the Church of Scientology, and the "Captain Morgan for President" group) were handing out fliers, but in a low-key sort of way.
After they'd gotten their fill of the scenery, we headed out to give them the required dose of Good Ice Cream. We took them to Christina's. :-) This also gave
sdavido a chance to go to the spice annex, which he's been wanting to do. The ice cream was wonderful as always. I got two new flavors - Coconut Butterfinger and Ajita (I think), which is Mexican caramel. Very rich.
So the DNC didn't seem to affect us too much. Of course, I was trying to be aware of it, so we left the city around 3. If we'd stayed later it might have gotten more complicated. But it was a very nice day on the whole.
On another note, two comic strips that I had to share:
A cute Fox Trot about sugar
And a really great Cathy about ice cream

Date: 2004-08-02 01:42 pm (UTC)Good choice.
Did you see the article (http://www.boston.com/news/globe/magazine/articles/2004/07/25/flavor_philosophy/) about Christina's in last Sunday's Boston Globe Magazine?
