I'm back!

You mean you didn't miss me? I'm crushed... (snif)

Seriously, I've been offline for a week now b/c my computer crashed when we installed a driver for our new cable modem. Very frustrating, as you would imagine. After several days of trying everything we could think of, calling people for advice, etc., the kind and generous [livejournal.com profile] lensman came out and managed to revive it. Yay! I'm finally back up and running, but I imagine it's going to take me a while to catch up. So if I answer a question that's several days old, that's why. :-)

I was planning to post an entry last Sunday night, but couldn't. I was planning to tell you all about our family reunion. My mother's mother's family, that is. They used to hold them fairly often, but it's been 13 years since the last one. This one was prompted by my mother's cousin S.'s 89th birthday. He thought it would be nice to get everyone together again. (The last one was to celebrate his mother's 90-somethingth, I believe; sadly, she died soon afterwards.)

So last Sunday, [livejournal.com profile] sdavido and I drove down to the family farm in North Dartmouth. It's a lot smaller than it used to be - the land the Dartmouth Mall is on used to be part of the farm - but it was still the best place to hold the reunion. We arrived to find construction in progress, which was a bit confusing. Turns out that S. donated a piece of land to be used for a school for disabled children. He's that kind of guy.

We went past the dusty area to where a tent had been set up. The family started with 7 siblings. About 100 people showed up for the reunion. Impressive, if a bit disorienting - it's strange to be with so many relatives who you don't know. ("Our" side was about 20 people. But we're all local - some of these people had come from Georgia, Florida, California...)

After a bit of settling-in, S. introduced everyone - not each person, more along the lines of "everyone from so-and-so's family, stand up!" - and called representatives from each branch up to talk about their family. As it happened, I had brought along a family tree which had been compiled during the last reunion, and subsequently distributed. I thought it would be nice to update it. So I had been passing it around from table to table, asking people to fill in what was missing. When our delegation went up, I asked my mother to ask if everyone could please update their piece. This somehow turned into an announcement that I was updating the family tree and would be sending the new version out to everyone. Oops. Um, okay...

So I spent the rest of the afternoon running around with the notebook, and getting people's contact information. I seem to have acquired a new project. I don't object, it'll be a nice thing to have done, but I wasn't exactly set up for this. [livejournal.com profile] pressburger, I'm probably going to be asking you for advice soon...

At the end of the afternoon, as we were saying goodbye to cousin S. (very nice guy, and in amazingly good shape, thank G-d), he invited me and [livejournal.com profile] sdavido to come out sometime and visit, and he'd tell us stories about the family. Very tempting. We might do it, just have to find the time.

On another note, I imagine most of you have seen this by now - I was going to post it a while ago - but for those who haven't: Hear the word of the Flying Spaghetti Monster!

Glad to hear your computer's working again.

Do you have photographs of relatives as part of the family tree? We found some old family photos when going through the stuff in my Mom's house, and I've asked Mom to identify and label the people in the pictures, since otherwise we'll never know who they were...

Some people did bring pictures, but just for the day. I knew a few people but not all.

Of course we missed you. I did not know that you had a family like mine. Cool.

In what way? You mean, big? Except I don't know most of them...
