We found out why there were police cars all over the neighborhood when we got home from my mom's birthday party last night... this happened right across the street from us. It's kind of surreal. This really is a quiet neighborhood, the worst disturbance we've had in the 3 1/2 years we've lived here was people screaming out of windows after the Red Sox won their championship. Presumably this was an isolated incident, but still, it's not what you want to hear. I hope they find the people responsible soon, and that this doesn't have a negative effect on our property values...

Eek! Even when I lived in NYC, that sort of news was shocking. I hope they catch the b**ds.

That's dreadful for you both. I hope they find those responsible soon, for your safety and piece of mind.

Everything I heard makes it sound like it was targeted, and not random. In a way, that's comforting.

Yeah, I found myself thinking about what it means to live in a "safe" or "dangerous" neighborhood. On the one hand, a single shooting (as opposed to, say, constant gunfire in the streets, as it was in Dot for a while a month ago) in someone's home can happen anywhere, and really doesn't necessarily mean anything about the neighborhood. After all, people are occasionally murdered in Newton and Brookline, too.

On the other hand, it means that your neighbors are the sort of people who get shot; worse, targeted to be shot. Which can't be great.

It is a concern. Many cities, NYC not included, have seen a dramatic rise in the murder rate this year due to increased gang activity. I hope this wasn't gang related.

I would be surprised if it were.

It is kind of strange... I imagine it would be even weirder if I had ever met these people.

Agreed. A domestic conflict, sad as it is, can happen anywhere. Random drive-by violence would be more worrisome for the long term.

It looks like they got the culprits.

Wow! I hadn't heard - thanks for the alert! I guess the neighbors are the last to know...
