Made a macaroni casserole recipe tonight that I've been wanting to try... Monday is a good night for me to try things, b/c I get home around 7 and [livejournal.com profile] sdavido teaches 'til 9:30, so I have some time to experiment before picking him up. It came out well. Now that the January craziness is past, I'm enjoying the chance to be domestic again.

After dinner I turned on the TV to watch the final group of Olympic pairs skaters. It turned out to be fairly dramatic, as the woman partner of the last pair fell during their performance, but decided to continue. They wound up with the silver medal. (The gold went to a pair who had a serious accident in a previous performance. As I said, dramatic.) I was glad that the silver couple was able to recover and finish their program, but I hope she hasn't done herself serious injury by continuing.

And... we have a new victim member! Let's have a warm LJ welcome for [livejournal.com profile] aunt_becca! Yaaaaaay!

Pairs skating

Was it just me, or was the skating in the pairs competition really disappointing? I felt they were all skating by the numbers, to maximize their potential scores, with little or no attention to expression and flow. Yes, of course they need to do that with the new scoring system, but they still need to pay attention to choreography. Making a beautiful program will also raise scores even with this system.

I didn't see every pair skate, but I thought the silver-winning pair was the best in artistic terms. Probably I was also sympathizing because of that awful fall and her courage in continuing, but I really liked their skate best. Still, even their performance didn't measure up to what I expect.

In contrast, I'm watching the men's short programs right now, and I think they are still managing to fit in artistry in addition to score-maximizing moves. What do you think?

I agree on both points. I also thought the pairs weren't as impressive as usual - in particular, I thought the symmetry on the spins & jumps wasn't as good as it usually is. I wasn't sure whether that was really so, though, or if I was just remembering past programs as being better than they really were.

And I did think the men's programs were more interesting, but it also seemed to me that there were a higher than usual number of falls & flubs. Did you think so too? If so, do you think people are really thrown by the new scoring system, or do you think that the newest group of skaters just haven't had as much practice?

They were pretty sloppy. Maybe partially because it was short program?

Maybe, or could be nerves, who knows... it'll be interesting to see what happens tomorrow night.
