We got a lot done this afternoon. I was at the store this morning, but left around 2 p.m. as [livejournal.com profile] sdavido and I had dentist appointments. (My uncle is our dentist, so I actually enjoy going.) We drove through the sleet to the dentist's office, and had our checkups. Then we headed out to B.J.'s (stopping at Krispy Kreme on the way...) to shop for shalach manot* ingredients. After that we got back on the highway and drove up to Macy's. Today was the last day of a half-price sale, and we wanted to look for a new suitcase. ([livejournal.com profile] sdavido's has gotten pretty beaten up, plus after almost losing it a couple times I really wanted something that wasn't black so it would stand out on a luggage carousel.) After some deliberation we bought a nice one that's kind of a golden bronze; not what I was originally thinking of, but it's a nice neutral, and a bit different. (We were considering several that were varying shades of blue. They also had several red ones, but I hate red.) Then we wandered around the mall a bit and finally headed back home through the sleet. Messy day to drive. And between the dentist and B.J.'s and the luggage it wound up being an expensive day, too. But we did check several things off our to-do list, so I think it was a good day on the whole.

* For those who aren't familiar with the term "shalach manot": There's a Jewish holiday called Purim on which it's customary to give gifts of food to your friends. (For details, see The Book of Esther.) This can be as simple as an apple and a cookie, and ranges all the way up to big fluffy gift baskets. My family has always liked to have a bit of fun with it - we usually do some kind of a theme - and since we got married [livejournal.com profile] sdavido has gotten into it, too. But since we make several dozen of these, we buy the contents in bulk as much as possible - it would be prohibitively expensive otherwise.

Got up early today to take [livejournal.com profile] sdavido in to work, since the weather was gross and he was a little stuffy. It is awful out there... anyone local who's reading this before going out, be very careful. We're expecting 4 - 8 inches, which ordinarily wouldn't be such a big deal, but it's coming on top of the slush that's already there so it's really messy and slippery. I saw a lot of people and cars slipping. Thank G-d I didn't slide. (I'm very careful, my car and I understand each other, and we got new snow tires last year.)

On the way back from dropping him off, I called my mother to tell her the conditions, and she checked the forecast and said nobody's going to come out in this so there's no point in opening the store, and I should go home. Which I did. Very carefully. Getting back into our space in the driveway (which is on a hill) was a bit of an adventure but thankfully I made it.

So... I have a snow day! Yay! At the moment, my cat is happily purring in my lap. Then I might actually catch up on some of the tons of things I'm behind on! I'm a little worried about how [livejournal.com profile] sdavido is going to get home later, but we'll deal with that then. Right now I'm going to make myself a cup of cocoa and let the idea of being home sink in a bit. :-)

Hello out there in LJ land! Well, we're back from Arisia. Everything went smoothly (with minor snags - see below), and a good time was had by all. Read more... )
Tomorrow, back to reality! There is a lot of snow out there... the heaps by the sidewalks are shoulder-high, and the streets are narrowed as a consequence, and fairly messy. I hope I don't have any trouble getting to work in the morning!

Just had to record that I actually got up early today. :-) I was worried about [livejournal.com profile] sdavido waiting for the T today in the Cold weather (it was 4 or 6 degrees this morning, depending who you listen to), especially b/c he was a little stuffy yesterday. So I went to bed early last night (well, by my standards - around midnight), got up at 6 this morning, and took him to work for his 8:00 class. On the way back I stopped at the supermarket, then came home and made 2 desserts for the Kosher Konspiracy dinner at Arisia. I'm just waiting for the second one to come out of the oven. Then off to work... today's a 10-to-8 day, then tonight I have to start packing for Arisia. So far everything's going according to plan, I just hope I'm still awake later! (If I don't answer mail tonight, it means I ran out of steam...)

Brrrr...

Well, it's 6 degrees outside... time to turn on the heat, I guess. :-) (Our unit's next to the furnace room, so it has to get really cold before we feel it...)

I've been spending most of my free time lately (such as it is) on a layout project. Not unusual. Several of the items have Hebrew in them, which is slightly annoying b/c it requires typing the sentence in reverse, and the keyboard conversions for the fonts I use are not intuitive. But it's still manageable. However, the page I just turned over has a long Hebrew quote which looks like complete gibberish. At first I thought the person had used the wrong font somehow, but as I stared at it I came to the realization that it's backwards. So now not only do I have to type it in from the end of the sentence letter by letter, converting as I go, but I also have to work from the opposite end, without losing my place... keeping in mind that if the lines start to wrap the sentence may not make sense. Aiiigh!

Not much else to report here, the last few days were Succot so we mostly spent our time eating. :-) Fortunately the weather was nice most of the time, though there were some rainy spells mixed in. And [livejournal.com profile] sdavido has come down with a cold... hopefully it'll be a short one.

Rant over, back to turning my brain inside-out...

I'm caught up on LJ! Finally! Yay! Took longer than I thought (and I allowed a fair amount of time), so I don't think I'm going to get to all the other things I wanted to do tonight... but that's something, at least.

To update, we had a very nice holiday, except for the weather. Hot and extremely sticky the first two days (and we were out walking in it a lot), then pouring rain the third. At least it broke the humidity! The weather now is rather cool, though I believe it's supposed to warm up again soon. Ah, New England...

This morning we got up Way Too Early so we could go on my family's annual cemetery trip. Read more... )

Not much else to report... lots to do, not enough time to do it in. I'll have to try and manage my time carefully these next couple weeks as they're shortened by the holidays. Hopefully everything will get done, somehow...
