In case you haven't heard, Michelle Kwan has dropped out of the Olympics. I feel badly for her but it sounds like she's making the right decision. And I'm sure she was also feeling tremendously pressured b/c since she already has a silver and a bronze, anything less than a gold would have been looked at as a disappointment by some people. (Ridiculous, but true.) Hopefully she won't have too many regrets. This does change the dynamics, though... the fact that the alternate is Sarah Hughes' sister is fascinating.

And, news for those of you who aren't into ice skating... we didn't open the store today b/c of the snow. (You might have already figured that out.) My mother is still musing about the two of us going in and rearranging some displays, etc. that we can't really do when there are customers, but it's kind of nice to have a snow day... we'll see how it goes.

I recently showed [livejournal.com profile] sdavido an ad in Car and Driver that I thought was impressive. It's a mostly blank page with a library-card pocket mounted on it, and a typical-looking lender card in the pocket (affixed with a glue dot). When you pull it out, the other side of the card has information about the car being advertised. The caption on the page says something along the lines of "the only other place you can find this kind of peace and quiet." (They're promoting the silence and smoothness of the new car.) I thought it was very clever, and since S. likes to bring odd bits of cultural media into his classes, I thought he'd like to see it. (He may bring it in for sociology.) But he also pointed out that most of his college students wouldn't relate to the ad, since they grew up with the Web and haven't really used card catalogs. It makes sense that the target audience is older, given the car in question, but it's amazing how wide that generational shift is...

(Yes, we can extrapolate cutural trends from almost anything. Never a dull moment around here!)

I was in the supermarket earlier, and they are, of course, playing Christmas music. At one point "Jingle Bells" came on. I was only half-listening, and my mind isn't really on that holiday, so what I heard probably isn't what the author intended... but I thought some might find it amusing:

"What fun it is to laugh and sing a slaying song tonight!"

Gee, I hadn't realized Buffy was such a big part of Christmas...

Time to turn your clocks back an hour!

(I almost forgot, thought someone else might need a reminder...)

While I have your attention (?), if I have angered or offended you in the past year, I apologize, and hope you will forgive me. If you tell me what I did, I'll try not to do it again.

I think that's all for the moment. You may now return to your normally scheduled lives...

I've been needing new shoes for a while, and decided I really have to get some before Rosh haShana. Fortunately one of my cousins married a guy who works in his family's shoe store (relatives can be useful). So I went out there tonight to look for shoes. Read more... )

On the way back tonight, I saw two interesting license plates (both from NH) which I thought might amuse people. One read "KTRINA" (I imagine she's feeling self-conscious right now!) and the other read "1017FNX" (which I thought might particularly interest [livejournal.com profile] gnomi)... :-)

[livejournal.com profile] sdavido killed seven big flies tonight. I told him that he deserves a belt! Of course, we'd prefer not to have the flies in the first place (we don't know where they're coming from), but at least I know that he'll protect me. :-)

He also gave me an early birthday present tonight (prompted by coincidental speculation about the possibility of finding such a thing): a copy of W.O.S.A.T. on DVD. Whee! Have I mentioned that he's really good at finding things?... (I gave him an early present of a cool tie in exchange.)

In other news, Scheherazade went in to have her teeth cleaned today, and still seems a bit glazed from the anesthesia. Hopefully she'll be back to her lucid fuzzy self soon.

We lost power for a few hours at the store today (due to a fierce rainstorm). We did what paperwork we could by candlelight, and fortunately the power came back on before it got really dark. Shortly afterwards a frequent customer came in, and we started chatting about blackouts. She said that her kids get completely freaked out when there's an outage. At first I thought that was odd, but then it occurred to me that since we're Jewish (she's not), we're accustomed to the idea of not using power on Shabbos, at least. We set lights on timers, but when one goes off, it's off... and if you get up in the middle of the night, well, it's dark. It hit me as I was talking to her that, outside of a blackout, her kids have probably never been in a situation where they can't turn a light on. That just struck me as interesting for some reason...

Does anybody know of a library and/or school that would be interested in some old-but-crisp magazines? I have several boxes of mid-90s Newsweeks (near-mint) in my parents' attic that I had been saving for a while, but we don't really have room for them... but I hate to throw out perfectly good magazines. (There are some Smithsonians up there, too.) It seems to me that someone should have a use for them. I was thinking of sending them down to The Book Thing, but we're worried about the shipping cost. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Apparently people are discovering that nerds are good for business. If I had more free time (and didn't hate the smell of alcohol), I might check some of these out!

Did it have to be Daylight Savings tonight? I could really use that extra hour... (sigh)

I spent a fair chunk of time tonight on the phone with a tech support guy at Comcast, trying to resolve a connection problem. (It's working now, obviously.) At one point in the conversation, after he'd told me to change a computer setting, I said, "Okay, it seems to have reacclimated." He said, "What?" I repeated myself, and he asked me to define "reacclimated." Then he asked me to spell it. Then he got all excited about having learned a new word, and started throwing it into the conversation at random moments. Which was amusing, but... I didn't think that was such an obscure word. What do you think? Was he out of touch, or have I just been spoiled by having intelligent and well-read friends?

[livejournal.com profile] sdavido has been put in charge of paper distribution for the PCA/ACA conference (this is actually pretty important), and got permission (and plans) from Filthy Pierre to use the design for his Famous Flyer Racks. But somebody needs to build them... Someone had actually agreed to do it, but [livejournal.com profile] sdavido hasn't been able to contact him for several weeks and is worried that he's flaked. Does anyone know someone who is able to follow plans and cut fiberglass (or something equivalent), and would be able to do this in the next few weeks? The budget for this isn't very big, unfortunately, but I can always add some cookies. :-) Any help with construction and/or leads for same would be very, very much appreciated. Thanks!

For those of you who might be interested, today was the 10,000th episode of Days of Our Lives. My mother and I dug out the little portable TV and plugged it in at the store so we could watch it. (We used to follow it, but have been "out of the loop" for a while.) They had Frances Reid, who plays Alice Horton (one of the few remaining members of the original cast), do an introduction and postscript to the episode, which was rather sweet. It's amazing to realize it's been around that long...

A few years ago, I started keeping a list of my friends' children's names and ages. I felt embarrassed about needing to write them all down, but I was having trouble keeping track. As time passes I am increasingly glad I decided to do this. After my most recent update, the current total of friends' and cousins' children (aged 10 or under) is 57, with 4 more expected in the next few months (G-d willing). Maybe it's not just that I have a bad memory for names, after all...

Sigh...

I have jury duty tomorrow. I don't mind in the abstract, I know it's an important part of the justice system and all that... but... (1) I have to be there at the time when I'm usually just getting up; (2) it's in a part of town I really don't know (hope I can find it, and the traffic's not too bad); and (3) I don't like leaving my mom alone in the store, it's hard not having back-up if it gets busy. Oh well. Hopefully I'll get there on time, and won't have to stay there all day. At worst I'll have some time to read.

In other news, I think the Red Sox won their baseball game. (I'm really not into sports, for those of you who don't know.) I say this because for the past half-hour, we've been hearing monkey howls from outside, and car horns honking, and car alarms going off... and police sirens in the distance. I told [livejournal.com profile] sdavido that tonight I'm really glad we don't park on the street. I dearly hope that there isn't going to be a repeat of what happened when the Patriots won a big game last year, when people tipped cars over and set fire to them in the streets. I cannot comprehend why happiness equals destruction in some people's minds... can't they just jump up and down and hug each other?

But I should really get to bed (assuming the monkey howls quiet down). If I don't get to finish answering e-mail and posts tonight, I'll try to catch up tomorrow.

I've been spending most of my free time lately (such as it is) on a layout project. Not unusual. Several of the items have Hebrew in them, which is slightly annoying b/c it requires typing the sentence in reverse, and the keyboard conversions for the fonts I use are not intuitive. But it's still manageable. However, the page I just turned over has a long Hebrew quote which looks like complete gibberish. At first I thought the person had used the wrong font somehow, but as I stared at it I came to the realization that it's backwards. So now not only do I have to type it in from the end of the sentence letter by letter, converting as I go, but I also have to work from the opposite end, without losing my place... keeping in mind that if the lines start to wrap the sentence may not make sense. Aiiigh!

Not much else to report here, the last few days were Succot so we mostly spent our time eating. :-) Fortunately the weather was nice most of the time, though there were some rainy spells mixed in. And [livejournal.com profile] sdavido has come down with a cold... hopefully it'll be a short one.

Rant over, back to turning my brain inside-out...

I think I'm caught in the middle of an LJ restructuring, things keep moving around...

But that's not the odd coincidence. The odd coincidence is that I called the police twice today. (Not 911, don't worry.) Read more... )
